Bound By The Law David Field May 13, 2010 John 8 32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34Jesus answered them,Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever:butthe Son abideth ever. 36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Every lie or falsehood causes its victim to be bound by the lie. It couldn’t be truer that the truth will set you free. Do not fear conviction because it leads to freedom.
Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
The things that Jesus said, recorded in the bible, were said directly to the people of that day, and also to the people of our day. This is a fact that all Christians profess to believe. But do they really? Many Christians take parts out and say, “That was for the people of that day”, or “He was talking to the Pharisees. We are not Pharisees”. Then I’ve heard it said that the signs and wonders that Jesus performed were for that day only because of the hardness of the Jewish people’s heart. We don’t need miracles today. This thinking implies that we are better than God’s chosen people. Paul has something to say about those Gentiles thinking themselves better than the Jews.
Romans 11(Paul speaking to Gentiles) 20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
The religious leaders of Jesus day felt the need to add to the Law of Moses because they did not understand the spirit of God’s law. In their attempt to follow the law, they redefined the law by adding to it. For example where God said, “remember the Sabbath and keep it holy”. God said, no work is to be done. They had do define “work”, so they added a bunch of ordinances explaining what is to be avoided. They took it upon themselves to define the number of steps that could be taken, and the weight that was allowable to be lifted, etc. They are truly bound by their own laws.
God’s intention of his law was never to bind. The intention of the law was to set his people free from the consequences of bad choices. For example, people can be set free of the ill effects of eating pork. And people today can be set free of cancer if they would stop taking foreign materials in the form of poisonous chemicals, into their bodies. Stop taking in Hollywood entertainment, to help you get free of fear, hate, lust, greed, etc. Taking a day of rest in every seven days is good for your emotional state. The occasional fast helps to cleanse the body of toxins. I can go on. All of Gods Laws are for your good and well being, not for a burden. You want to live by your own rules, but you didn’t create the laws of nature; you cannot change them, so the two (your rules and nature) do not mesh, and the result is not the result you were hoping for.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Mark 2:27 And he said unto them,The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Because mankind is now born in original sin, it is natural to seek self, and self-preservation. This is why the Pharisees did not understand the Law of Moses. They did not understand the spirit because they were not seeking the spirit. They were instead seeking self-preservation. They were seeking self. People today are still seeking self. Most Christians go to church to be saved, not because they love Jesus. Because they don’t love Jesus, they don’t seek Jesus. Instead they seek to obey the law so they can get into heaven. They seek to make the right decisions to go to heaven. The church talks about “making a decision for Christ”. Jesus requires more than that. He requires a relationship with him. He does not want mindless slaves.
There is nothing new under the sun. The spirits in action in the day Jesus walked the earth in human form are still on earth today. The enemy is the same. The spirit of religiosity that had such a tight grip on the Pharisees is still in control in religion today. Church goers are still bound by their own laws because they still do not understand the spirit of God.The Christian bible is the equivalent to the Pharisees scripture of law, the Law of Moses, in the minds of Christians today. The Pharisees clung tightly to their written word, and religious zealots are still doing that same exact thing today. Bible thumpers! Seek God, and he will reveal himself to you. Continue to seek self, and you will never live in the spirit. You will live in the flesh, which dies.
Galations 2:4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:
Galations 4:9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
Galations 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Non-believers do not want the bondage you are selling. They already have plenty of their own. You can only give what you have. You cannot be a witness to Jesus if you don’t have Jesus. Jesus is not bondage.
2 Timothy 2:9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, evenunto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.
If you cannot hear the Holy Spirit’s guidance, you must rely entirely on your bible to try to understand God, and this is not what God intended. This is leaning unto your own understanding. This is the reason for all the different church denominations, and this is the reason for argument of the word in Christian circles.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
Jesus did not say he would send a book or a collection of books when he left, for your understanding. He said he would send the Holy Ghost. And nowhere does the bible teach to test everything against the bible. I believe this is a good place to start, but the bible is not the last word. God has the last word.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which isthe Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: Ephesians 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
The Apostle Paul stood before the members of the early church originally repeating these words of God. He also wrote many of them, and the church of Jesus Christ saved these words through all the generations, and added them to the cannon of the bible. Paul did not read from a bible; he spoke from the spirit. There was no bible; they had the writings of the Old Testament prophets.Christians today will not live by the Old Testament. If it cannot be found in the New Testament, it isn’t considered biblical, and is discounted. So why can’t Christians today accept anything that isn’t proven in what they call the written word of God? Some answer because Paul is now dead, and there is no other man today with the infilling of the Holy Spirit. This is my point! Paul is telling us to get filled with the Holy Spirit! Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit, and the Christians that understood what he said understood it by the Holy Spirit within them, and no bible was necessary. Without the Holy Spirit, the bible is useless paper and ink. If you hang on to your bible like it is all you have, it is because it IS all you have. You need the Spirit of God.
The knowledge of this can set you free, or infuriate you, at your choosing. If you are seeking God, then this knowledge will be your key, that you need the Holy Spirit or more of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Paul did not say, “as many as read their bibles everyday”, he didn’t even say “as many as pray for hours everyday”, he said, “as many are led by the Spirit of God”. How are you led by the Spirit of God? You seek the Spirit of God. You sit at his feet. Remember the story of Jesus with Martha, and Mary. You sit and listen to him. You wait on the Lord. Come to him as a little child. Don’t come as a prideful person full of your head knowledge of the bible, and set in your former learning. That is the spirit of religiosity that bound the Pharisees in their own pride.
2 Timothy 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
The power is in the Holy Ghost. If you deny the power, you deny the Holy Ghost.
Mark 10:15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Matthew 12 31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemyagainstthe HolyGhost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in theworldto come.
Mark 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
Are you starting to see the importance of the Holy Spirit? How do you grieve the Holy Spirit? By placing your bible above the Holy Spirit, as a higher authority in your life.
Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
It doesn’t say here, “baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Bible”. The bible is not one of the three.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which isthe Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
